Designing boats is a mix of art and technology, and in today's world the technology can become a major design factor. In one week I might revise a spreadsheet to calculate rigging loads, evaluate ISO standards on stability, write a comparison of out drives with surface piercing props, solve problems with creating developable surfaces, and calculate loads on a mast bracket from heave in a seaway. All this engineering must be tempered with real world experience. I am endlessly researching new scientific data, working to keep up with new regulations and standards, and studying older research in light of recent findings.
