In 2006 a young couple approached me about rearranging and re-building a 50’ on deck schooner they had just bought in Seattle. The boat was originally built in Vietnam of tropical hardwood but everything was a bit crude.

They had a general idea of what they wanted; a pilothouse and two separate sleeping cabins were foremost. Sorting out the general arrangement, integrating the revised look and adding the pilothouse, drawing a new rig, all transformed this vessel. While the actual man hours I spent on the project were small, being involved right at the start to focus the overall direction was key to the success of this rebuild. Sassafrass is a vessel all can be proud of.

The Sassafrass rebuild project has been documented by her owners at http://picasaweb.google.com/schoonersassafrass and at http://forum.woodenboat.com/showthread.php?67253-progress.
