Yacht designer Tad Roberts offers a wide range of yacht design and naval architecture services including new design of power, sail, and small boats, oversight of refits and restoration, and consulting on Transport Canada and ISO regulations and standards. He brings to his work some thirty years of experience with expertise gained in projects from traditional wooden boats to steel commercial vessels to cold-molded mega-yachts.

Pilotbay 38, Traditional Ketch
Pilotbay 38 is a traditional heavy-displacement ketch designed for comfortable living aboard year round in the Pacific northwest.The pilothouse has storage to starboard, a row of deep drawers here for tools and parts needed on deck. Forward of the storage lockers is an inside helm with swivel chair; it's a great place to be on those cold days when you're under power. Opposite is a raised L shaped seat 6' long with a folding table.

Philbrooks 58 Cold-molded Express
Materials and Construction Methods: Wood, fiberglass, steel, and aluminum construction. Modern wood-epoxy construction of all sizes is a specialty, but work in metal currently is a large part of my practice. New design with NC files for origami style construction is available. Construction plans to ABS, Lloyd's, and ISO class.

Overview of Naval Architecture and Consulting Services Power: Re-power and systems design. Predicting performance with new power or propulsors. Sail: Re-rigging and deck design. Spar and rig engineering, with deck layout for efficiency. Considerable experience with sailing yachts to 154' ( Selected projects, gallery ). Stability: Hydrostatics, Stability, Damaged stability. Transport Canada and ISO stability booklets. Close working relationship and mutual respect with TC personnel.
Refit
61' Wooden DeFever Trawler Refit
The major part of my work in refit projects is oversight, or advising on how and where work is to proceed. As well as on-site consulting, this usually involves outlining the project's scope and schedule, preparing written specifications for materials, parts and equipment, and time, labour, amd costs estimates.I advise on and produce as needed technical drawings for replacing or upgrading systems and equipment, including the reduction of noise and vibration, and the redesign of masts and stabalizer systems, and any exterior or interior alterations and arrangements, including concept sketches and working drawings.
Small Boats
24' Raised Deck Canoe Yawl
My small boat designs are based on traditional types but incorporate modern hull forms, appendages, construction, materials, and ergonomics. Most can be built by the dedicated amateur; one of the benefits of a new design is simplifying construction. Many are available with full size lofting. Traditional styling ensures these little boats can become heirlooms, valuable for generations.
